“In the fall of 2000, Wilco entered the studio to record their highly anticipated fourth album. Building on three critically acclaimed albums and a reputation for phenomenal live shows, the band seemed posed to cement its reputation as one of the great American rock groups. So how is it that one year later, with completed record in hand, the band found itself rejected by its corporate record label and missing two of its original members? First-time filmmaker and award-winning photographer Sam Jones was on-hand, chronicling this turbulent chapter in Wilco’s history as it unfolded.”

1 entry per person. Open to United States residents only. Winner will be chosen September 29th at Noon EST. Enter after the jump. (more…)

Heroes, The Soundtrack

The trend of late seems to be getting great indie rock bands and use them to supply the tunes for major film and television franchises. It’s a great marriage because it lends credibility to the one and grants exposure to the other.

So when NBC announced the lineup for their upcoming soundtrack to their breakout show Heroes, it was tough to act surprised. Darlings such as Nada Surf, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab For Cutie, and Wilco will all have songs on the soundtrack.

If that wasn’t enough, the heads of the peacock network have big plans to launch the soundtrack as well. (more…)

People Go Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga For The Short-List This Year

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

The Short ListOkay so SPOON wasn’t the only band nominated for this year’s Short-List Music Prize but they had the best album title that could be used for making a snazzy headline like I did.

Nominess come from a large pool of usually independent (spirited if not labeled) artists called, you guessed it, the Long-List. After that, a panel narrows down the list down to determine one winner for the year. This year’s panelists were Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), Ronnie Vannucci (The Killers), Rev. Moose (CMJ), Chris Douridas (KCRW) and the hosts of Hunnypot Internet Radio.

This year, 7 of the 10 finalists are from outside of the United States, making it one of the most diverse showing of a list in a while. Past winners have included Sigur-Ros, N*E*R*D, TV On The Radio, Wilco, M.I.A., and Sufjan Stevens.
