Tenacious D, QOTSA, Matt Cameron Cover Cream

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

We’re always suckers for the antics of TENACIOUS D. Probably because, in the spirit of John Kruk, they give us the dream that an everyman could be a major leaguer, or in JB and JG’s case, rock stars.

The D recently joined Queens Of The Stone Age at the Henry Fonda Theatre in LA to help raise money for Queen’s friend/collaborator Natasha Shneider’s memorial fund. Schneider lost a battle with cancer and QOTSA rallied fans and fellow musicians to raise some money.

As with any decent benefit there was an all-star team up. That night it was The D, QOTSA and Pearl Jam drummer, Matt Cameron putting on a rendition of Cream’s “I Feel Free”. The D also helped the song along with some (interpretive?) dancing at the end.

Foo Fighters And Supergrass Channel Their Inner Who

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

VH1 is airing Rock Honors: The Who tonight. Basically, they throw a concert and have bands play cover songs of a classic heritage band that’s being honored.

The Who are the subject of tonight’s show and VH1 got the likes of Foo Fighters, Tenacious D, The Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam, and Incubus to get some rock done.

Supergrass frontman, Gaz Coombs stepped in for Dave Grohl on vocals since the Ghrolmeister’s voice wasn’t doing too well at the time of recording. Foo’s drummer Taylor Hawkins handled backing vocal duties. Watch a clip of the Foo/Grass cover of “Bargain” and get psyched for some rock tonight!

Jack Black, Dio, Halford And Others To Voice Video Game

Friday, October 26th, 2007

We’ve always thought of Jack Black as a sorta comic book character. So it’s kinda fitting that he will star in a new video game called Brütal Legend. The game (due out sometime in 2008) will star metal roadie, Eddie Riggs voiced by Black, on his tour of destruction through a mystical world of rock and roll legend.

Riggs, armed with a battle axe, guitar and a V8 engine will battle ogres, demons and other assorted mytholigical creatures. His goal is to assemble an army of headbangers and attempt to save the day and get the girl. The game also has several big names donating their vocal talents to the cause. The likes if Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, and Ronnie James Dio will all lend voices to the game.

For those that can’t wait that long. Lay your eyes on the game’s trailer now!

Tenacious D, The Best In Bluegrass

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Tenacious D Best In BluegrassEvery time I listen to TENACIOUS D’s music I think to myself, “How can this album be anymore awesomer?”. And then in my lack of a creative sprit, I get no further than that thought. It’s a really good thing that there are people out that that aren’t as limited as I, for the world would never have the record, Bluegrass Wrecks the Music of Tenacious D: This Is Just a Tribute. And what a sad world it would be if this album never existed.

On the album, the band Dust Bowl Cavaliers tear through the baddest of the badass tracks on The D’s album adding their bluegrass tones along the way. Check out snippets of the songs yourself but don’t saw we didn’t warn you of it’s awesomeness.

Be You The Academy Is? We Said “Nay, We Are But Men” - Rock! | The Academy Is… | Irving Plaza New York, NY | 2.22.2007

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

The Academy Is…Last night we rolled out to Irving Plaza to catch THE ACADEMY IS… perform a not-so-secret sold out show. The band said it was their first in 6 months and it showed a bit at first for it seemed they were trying to get into their groove a bit as they started their set off with a few favorites from their previous album Almost Here.

About 3-4 songs into the set they performed a new song from their upcoming album Santi. The new album that drops on the world this April and the reason for the band’s 6 month hiautus. If we were to give a description as to how the new music sounds our response would be ‘different’. Mainly because these songs don’t have the road tested efficiency that older songs have. Nor do they have the “I know every word to this jam” familiarity yet. Hell, some of the new songs were never before performed live until last night.

So with that we give you the chance to hear the band’s first single, “We’ve Got A Big Mess On Our Hands” so by the time the band hits your town on tour you will know all the words.

LISTEN: “We’ve Got A Big Mess On Our Hands”

We took some blurry pictures of the band and of a guy with a rad TENACIOUS D shirt on in front of us. You can see more of the blurry pictures and a video of them performing their new song “Seed” after the jump.
