Hayes got his start as a songwriter for Stax in 1962 with friend David Porter, and penned tunes for Carla Thomas, The Astors, and many hits for the R&B duo Sam & Dave. Later in the decade he launched his own solo career with albums such as 1967’s Introducing Isaac Hayes and 1969’s Hot Buttered Soul.

Hayes’ first four albums featured a mix of his own funk workouts along with interpretations of classic songs by Burt Bacharach and Jerry Butler. Covers of “I Stand Accused,” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” featured 5-8 minute long raps about love and its ups and downs which segued into 10 minute covers of the original songs.

His music remained challenging throughout much of his career, with 1971’s Black Moses featuring shorter arrangements and more raps (still at least eight years before the genre existed). Shaft from that same year was an almost-entirely instrumental soundtrack to the film of the same name and still hit number one on the charts and the song won Hayes his first Grammy. Early forays into disco and smooth soul brought Hayes’ career into the ’80s.

Though his prolificness dropped off towards the end of his career, Hayes remained in the public eye. He was in movies like I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Blues Brothers 2000 and Hustle & Flow, and he also voiced the elementary school chef in South Park until 2006 as the lovable and overly sexual “Chef.”

Hayes’ impact on R&B, funk, soul, disco and pop music is immeasurable. Dig on the tunes.

Rather than fight the natural order of life and keep quiet. We thought we’d supply a list of what we felt were hits and misses with this year’s nominations.

HIT: Props for realizing how great the [adult swim] show Robot Chicken is by giving it a nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. Even better that their Star Wars-themed episode, which highlighted the show’s creators and their own geekiness was the standout show.

MISS: While talking about Outstanding Animated Program and Star Wars. The Family Guy’s nominated episode, “Blue Harvest” which spoofed the same subject matter was unnessesarily long, overall unfunny, and boring.

MISS: Too many nods for the HBO mini-series John Adams. They seem like pity votes for a once great network and the standard for original programming. HBO has struggled the past few years trying to find shows to replace juggernauts The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and Sex In The City. More shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Flight Of The Conchords and less John From Cincinnatti and John Adams could be a good start.

HIT: Showtime is red-hot with Dexter, Weeds, and Califorinication. The Academy was on the mark in recognizing these shows.

HIT: 30 Rock dominating the nominations. To quote Tracey Jordan, “Live every week like it was Shark Week!”

HIT: No one seems to be watching Friday Night Lights so maybe an Emmy for Cast In A Drama Series will give the show a solid 3rd season and more importantly, viewers.

HIT: The Academy nailed the mark for the Outstanding Comedy Series with 30 Rock, Curb, Entourage, The Office. It gets a partial MISS for putting Two And A Half Men in place of the better deserved How I Met Your Mother or Flight Of The Conchords.

MISS: Lost is such a safe bet for Outstanding Drama even though it’s coming off one of it’s most sucktacular season and probably not worth the nod. And I’m exactly who in the Boston Legal camp knows, but that relationship is being milked as hard as possible to keep getting the Outstanding Drama nomination.

HIT: 30 Rock nearly sweeping the Guest Actor In A Comedy award.

MISS: For not giving JB Smoove anything in the Guest Actor In A Comedy category. His portrayal of Leon Black in Curb Your Enthusiasm was by far the best comedic performance of the year – “You got long balls Larry!”

MISS: Ryan Seacrest was nominated for…well anything.

MISS: No Larry David nods for Best Actor In A Comedy!?

HIT: Thank you for giving Mary-Louise Parker and Tina Fey nominations for Lead Actress In A Comedy. Funny, pretty and talented women are sometimes hard to come by and there are a few out there right now.

HIT: While on that subject, for honoring Sarah Silverman for her skit “I’m F*ing Matt Damon” and not her own show (it’s really not THAT funny) was a good call. Amy Poehler securing the first supporting-actress nom for Saturday Night Live since 1978 when both Jane Curtain and Gilda Radnor were nominated and Radnor won. It’d be a bit bittersweet if Poehler were to follow in the footsteps of Tina Fey and leave SNL to take part in the spinoff of The Office as it’s been rumored.

MISS: I think it was a requirement that your show already had to be cancelled to get the Original Title Theme Music nomination. We’re looking at you Kid Nation, Canterbury’s Law and Pirate Master. Of which, only Nation saw a complete season run while Law was cancelled after a handful of episodes and Master was cancelled after only one.

HIT: It’s fitting there were only 3 nominations for Grey’s Anatomy (two in the same supporting actress category) because it was a mediocre season to say the least.

HIT: The 3-way slugfest between Entourage’s Jeremy Piven, The Office’s Rainn Wilson and HIMYM’s Neil Patrick Harris for Supporting Actor In A Comdey shoud be fun to watch.

MISS: Not a single nomination for Rescue Me or It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has me thinking FX put all their rescourses behing promoting Damages. I’ll say it now – Denis Leary was robbed.

HIT: Multiple nominations for Brothers & Sisters. One of the most solidly casted, written, and acted series on tv at the moment.

HIT: The multiple nominations for The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. Because during an election year, there’s no better block of programming to watch that can at the same time educate, inform, and totally shred the political process.

MISS: Who’s actually watching Mad Men enough to give it all these nominations? I’m definitely not watching it and I watch everything…including Ice Road Truckers.

Some of our favorite parts include “I’m the Barack Obama of hittin’ that ass!”, “I bring a Rukus to the ladies!” and who can forget “Get in that ass Larry”?

I’m a huge Star Wars fan and generally have to check out something with the Lucas stamp even though he’s pimped out his product to pretty much anything and everything for the better part of 30 years. Regardless, in an effort to say I saw it, I made it a point to watch at least part of DOND.

First off, as someone who’s only seen small bits of a few episodes, I have to say comedian Nick Swardson was absolutely right when he said the show takes no skill. It’s just a person picking briefcases, “Hey is it that one? No? What about that one?”

The show started off with little surprise or fanfare. Of course Darth Vader was going to be “The Banker” oh and Storm Troopers holding cases, got that. Carrie Fisher shows up and contestant #1 cries a bit too much that she’s met her inspiration. Total tear jerk fest if I’ve ever seen one. And my interest is gone after 15 minutes. How long is this show? 2 HOURS! Is NBC really out of THAT much new programming that they air this show for two hours in prime time?

So the channel gets switched. How I Met Your Mother was starting on CBS and I’ll be damned if that Barney Stinson isn’t one of the best characters currently on television.

After HIMYM, I channel surf down to FOX to catch a new episode of House (finally!) on its new night. Then, while on the way to watch everyone’s favorite grumpy doctor with a Massive Attack theme song, I see it!

While passing Deal again, 13 year old Matt Kleinschmidt’s attention has been caught. 26 models from DOND dressed up like Princess Leia in her slave girl, gold bikini outfit!

Yes, I completely know it was a gimick designed for this exact reason, yes I know it’s juvenile, and yes I have seen it done before on other tv shows. But not in the form of 26 models! Sue me if I lost my mind even if for a minute and let my tween imagination run wild.

So I have to say thanks to George Lucas. For all the things you’ve done wrong with the Star Wars franchise, and we don’t need to name them (ahem! Jar Jar! ahem!). One area you can never go wrong with is the decision to put many very pretty women in skimpy outfits and remind us twenty-something dudes about our childhood.

I’ve thought nothing much of it, with the week’s other celeb nudity stories (Lindsay – yeah, does anyone else find our young drug-addled starlet posing as Marilyn’s last shoot somewhat foreboding?), letting it simply pass by. Admittedly, for a man who claims such prowess in bed, I certainly found his claims of “garbage” (see: Gene’s personal site) a little odd – wouldn’t he be proud?

And then here I was, this fine evening not an hour ago, exiting a party with some friends – where I also saw Rachel Dratch, looking very disheveled – to find myself witness to this spectacle…

Admitted, the photo quality isn’t great, but what you’re looking at is a billboard across the street from Chinatown Brasserie (3rd and Broadway – look it up) being erected AS I TYPE, for the new season of Simmons’ A&E show Family Jewels.

It’s elaborate as all hell, with a tagline reading “1 Man, 4800 Women?”, begging the reader to text “yes” or “no” to a number – above each yes/no option being a huge framed sign, with what I can only assume to be a counter, judging the tallied responses of John Q. Commuter.

I can’t help but wonder, is Simmons really the victim in this whole sex tape scandal? Or has the man simply executed another bit of media brilliance? One certainly cannot deny the media fortitude exhibited with KISS in the 70’s – which was partly, if not completely due to this man’s mind.

I lied.

A “good shot” wasn’t enough. We were here to win.

The Giants started the final drive of their season with Eli Manning poised to become the hero. And he completely stepped up to the challenge. A series of short passes and a few Brandon Jacobs culminated in a 3rd-and-5 for The G-men. A must have, really.

And one of the most miraculous plays in sports history occurred. Eli Manning, seemingly sacked, somehow escaped the swarming Patriots defense, wrestled himself away, scrambled, and heaved up a prayer. David Tyree answered it. Jumping with all his might, Tyree went to the highest point, and somehow trapped the ball between his hand and his helmet. And he came down with the ball.

It didn’t even seem like the amazement of that play had died down, before Eli tossed up a lob to Plaxico in the end zone for what turned out to be the game-winning score.

At this point, someone realized that maybe those New York Giants Super Bowl XLII Champions t-shirts already printed weren’t going to waste.

Here’s my personal favorite: “18 wins, 1 GIANT loss”

Congrats Giants! You played hard. You never gave up. You were perfect when you had to be. When it really counted.

Yo Gabba Gabba! has featured cameos by Tony Hawk, our favorite hobbit Elijah Wood and several other celebrities. The show’s creator, Christian Jacobs (aka The MC Bat Commander of The Aquabats), has written in musical spots for Shiny Toy Guns (aka The Shinys), The Shins and of course The Aquabats.

Coming up on November 26, Sugarland will be featured on the show’s “Dancey Dance” segment and on November 27, Cornelius will perform with Biz Markie in a “Biz’s Beat of the Day” segment.

10:25- There’s a great episode of Intervention on A&E about a 23 year old Meth addict that was molested as a child.

10:17 – 2 hours and 17 minutes we finally get a James Brown tribute. In about a half hour we’ll get one for the late, great Mary J Blige.

10:15 - Did Chris Brown sing a single note of that song? He danced his ass off but I’m not so sure about singing. Also I need to get me a set of pop-locking 8 year olds to follow me around at all times.

10:10 - I’m having a debate with my girlfriend as to what plastic surgery Smokey Robinson has had. Lionel Richie has clearly had none.

10:05 – Where’s Mary J Blige? I haven’t seen her in about 30 minutes? Is something wrong? Was there an accident? I know that there’s something they aren’t telling us.

9:43 - The short Dixie Chick is married to the guy that flies from Heroes. Was that common knowledge and I the last to know?

9:34 - Every time Terrance Howard speaks he sounds like he’s on the verge of tears. I think the Grammys have officially been re-named the Bliges, for all I see is Mary J. What’s The Donald up to on The Apprentice? Whoah, there’s an American Pie marathon on USA.

9:31 - No more Family Guy. Does anyone actually watch American Dad? Is fox too scared to yank it off the air because they don’t want to make the same mistake they did with Family Guy?

8:37 - Can someone tell me why Samuel L Jackson is sitting up near the front? Isn’t he in exile for at least the next year since Snakes On A Plane came out?
