Superdrag | Terminal 5, NYC | 4.11.2008

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Friday night Terminal 5 would be the scene of a show I waited ages to see - SUPERDRAG! Yeah the Knoxville rockers reunited and are touring. But this show was a bit different, the ‘drag was one-half of a co-headling show with Nada Surf! It was like 1996 reunited and came back with a rock vengence. My co-worker Graham pointed out if Harvey Danger were to handle the opening duties it might be a night of perfect-storminess that no one from my generation could have possibly handled (note: “Flagpole Sitta” is easily the best song from the ’90s - recognize!).

Graham and I also contemplated the odds of hearing both “Sucked Out” and “Popular” by the bands respecively. I’ve seen Nada Surf numerous times in the last few years and they never played their “hit”. And Superdrag was no different, not acknowledging their claim-to-fame song for some time. Graham summed it up by saying fans would easily feel ripped-off had neither band played their “jams” considering the line-up. (more…)

SXSW Live Blog | Nada Surf Acoustic At Paste/Stereogum Party

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

A few of us here were treated to NADA SURF’s performance at the Paste / Stereogum party at Volume. One of the few appearances the band will be doing at the festival, this marks the only official acoustic performance here.

In between songs, anxious fans shouted out their favorites, with the band all too happy to oblige - even joking before one “how does this one go?” Among the throngs of fans seen here - Jonah Matranga, known for his work in bands Far, Gratitude, New End Original and Onelinedrawing.

Standouts included versions of “Happy Kid” and set closer “See These Bones.” I’ll stop you before you ask - no, the band didn’t do an acoustic version of “Popular.”

With four professional cameras trained on the band during the entire set, one can only hope the performance makes it online or as a part of additional bonus features to an upcoming CD or even full DVD!

Nada Surf, The Jacket, Wilco, Death Cab For Cutie All Summoned To Be Heroes

Heroes, The Soundtrack

The trend of late seems to be getting great indie rock bands and use them to supply the tunes for major film and television franchises. It’s a great marriage because it lends credibility to the one and grants exposure to the other.

So when NBC announced the lineup for their upcoming soundtrack to their breakout show Heroes, it was tough to act surprised. Darlings such as Nada Surf, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab For Cutie, and Wilco will all have songs on the soundtrack.

If that wasn’t enough, the heads of the peacock network have big plans to launch the soundtrack as well. (more…)

NADA SURF is wasting no time cranking out those videos are they? They gave us the video for their song “Whose Authority” just a few weeks ago and now we turn around and have a decidely different style video for “I Like What You Say.” Different in that rather than opting for humans, we get some paper animation instead. The song is from their upcoming album Lucky, due out in February.

VIDEO: Nada Surf | “Whose Authority”

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

The new NADA SURF video for “Whose Authority” has surfaced. It’s the portrayal of a day in the life of a NYC bike messenger, played by Michael Maronna. You probably recognize Maronna as the older brother Pete in the Nickelodeon show, The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

You get good shots of frontman Matthew Caws and drummer Ira Elliot as characters that interact with the bike messenger. But bassist Daniel Lorca pops up at different moments of the video in on posters and magazine covers because he was unavailable for the shoot in person (he was in France). Enjoy.

There are also some “making of” video clips that were posted on Ira’s youtube account. Watch them here, here and here.

Nada Surf Is Hitting The Road, Lines Up Show With Superdrag Forcing Us To Get Nostalgic For 1996

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

It’s 1996!NADA SURF are going out on the road for the first part of 2008 in support of their new album, Lucky which will be released through Barsuk on Feb 5th. In the middle of the tour the band will be in Austin for SXSW partaking in that festival and what is has to offer.

That in and of itself is great news. The Little Ones and What Made Milwaukee Famous acting as the opening acts is even better news.

But perhaps the best news story of this entire tour is when the band hits NYC for the second time in April, they will be doing a co-headlining show with a recently reunited SUPERDRAG! This makes people like me smile for it gets us all weepy and nostalgic on the inside. And as someone mentioned earlier, the only thing missing from this show is HARVEY DANGER! Blam! Tickets go on sale this weekend.
