Did you catch the OSCARS last night? We did and overall it was a night with no clear frontrunner. Some awards went here, some there. Some people were snubbed all together. Here are some thoughts on the night.

- Jon Stewart was near perfect with his hosting duties. Great jokes and a perfect delivery. Even when he treaded into dicey territory (political jokes, etc) he was able to pull them off with ease. Also I have to commend him for giving people their “Oscar Moments”. Being a fan of the movie Once, I groaned when Marketa Irglova got the mic cut on her before she could give her thank yous for winning Best Original Song. Thanks, Jon for fixing this by bringing Marketa back out after the commercial break and giving her a well deserved moment.

- While on the subject of Original Song. 3 songs from one movie (Enchanted). C’mon there has to be more than 3 movies with good songs on them. No nods to Eddie Vedder for Into The Wild?

- The Animated Movie category was lacking, hard. The Simpsons, Shrek, B Movie were all released this year and none of them got any sort of recognition.

- Where was the mention of the passing of Brad Renfro in the “In Memoriam” section? Or an even bigger oversight, Roy Scheider!? Brody dies and no one notices?

Tell us what do you think?

Not sure if you want to see the new Rambo movie yet? We’ll tell you what you need to know. Now this isn’t one of those instances where we’ll watch it so you don’t have to. We’re telling you to watch the trailer a few times, the one with Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” playing in the background. Then once you are all hyped up singing “Let The Bodies Hit The Floo! Let The Bodies Hit The Floo!” like a ferret on Red Bull, you RUN and see this movie! Frankly, it’s the only way you will ever get the most rewarding experience possible.

A group of us saw the movie last night. We thought you’d benefit from our quick reviews in 100 words or less. But, to quote the kids from Reading Rainbow, “You don’t have to take our word for it.”

Jon Landman

Holy Crap, Stallone looks terrible; HGH & Steroids definitely don’t do the body good when you hit 63 years old. Rambo delivers on exactly what it promised from the previews and trailer. Killings, Shootings, More Killings and lots of bodies hitting the floor (although said song doesn’t actually appear in the movie = apparently the song was never a Nu-Metal hit in Burma). There is a loose plot and a classic John J. Rambo flashback sequence that was amazing. PLOT SPOILER AHEAD = Just Kidding. The enemy was destroyed and Rambo returns to America after years of being a confused killing machine.

Bram Teitelman

The Rambo movies had always held a mirror to society, whether it’s the Vietnam war (the first two), or Russia (the 3rd one). Now that we’re at a stalemate in Iraq, John J Rambo gives us a war we can win 20 years after the last flick hit theaters. The plot? Who cares, there’s killin’! After ferrying some Mission(aries) to Burma, instead of reaching for his revolver, Stallone reaches for his bow and arrow, knife, lots of high powered guns, and a nuclear warhead and rips someone’s throat out in a ballet of blood and gore. The first must-see of 2008!

Matt Kleinschmidt

Let the Midnight Meat Train hit the floor. Um, don’t bother looking for a plot for it was abandoned about 30 minutes into the flick. Right around the time Rambo decided that being a blacksmith and forging a knife makes you reflect upon your life of killing machine-ness. Evil dudes blow up, they get their throats ripped out, they have sex with young boys. Stallone shoots sterioids directly into his temples and is the “boat man.” In Burma it only rains at night and everything looks like your grandfather’s backyard. Also, in Burma, everyone comes out to fight to save the white lady but not the Burmese ones. Boom! Red Smoke!

Michelle Rakshys (who has already seen the movie twice!)

Sometimes a gal just isn’t in the mood for 27 Dresses, and would much prefer to watch limbs flying through the air. Luckily Rambo delivers those flying limbs, as well as headless bodies, and torsos with holes so big you can see more people getting killed on the other side. It also teaches us how to rip out a man’s throat with our bare hands, and how to blow-up tracking dogs. Who needs a plot line when there are more lessons than an episode of Man Vs. Wild? However, the mass amount of bloodshed overshadows many spoken gems, like “Live for nothing, die…for something”, which will surely end up as a bumper sticker or a commemorative t-shirt.

Most of my life philosophy is based around my deeply held belief that true love exists, and everyone can find it if they look hard enough. I’m not talking about some kind of fairytale bullshit where some dude rescues some chick from a dragon or whatnot, but the kind of love that makes you realize you have found your reflection in another person. The movie Eagle vs. Shark confirms this notion for me. That’s not to say that this movie is a Notebook-style love story; I say this simply because if the two main characters found each other, anybody should be able to do the same.

Quirky is a word there just begins to describe the mood of Eagle vs. Shark. Many people had described it to me as a “New Zealand Napoleon Dynamite“, and I can see where they draw the resemblance. I tend to like Eagle vs. Shark much better for two reasons: there is A, a plot, and B, character development. It follows the developing relationship of Lily and Jarrod, the male and female winners for the Most Awkward Person contest. Lily is a painfully shy Meaty Boy checkout girl who develops a raging crush on one of her regular customers. The Meaty Boy loving Jarrod is a space cadet in the highest sense of the term, so wrapped up in the fantasy world he has created for himself that he would fail to recognize his face in the mirror, let alone another person’s undying love for him.

The surprisingly tenacious Lily wrangles an invite to one of Jarrod themed parties, in which attendees are required to dress as their favorite animal (hence, Eagle vs. Shark). Their interaction at this shindig results in what I am going to cautiously christen the most hilariously awkward hookup scene in the history of film. I mean really; the movie is worth seeing specifically for that two minutes of makeout gold.

The plot potion of the film begins when the new couple journeys to Jarrod’s hometown to exact revenge on his childhood nemesis. We are then introduced to the dysfunctional excuse for a family that has managed to produce a man-child like Jarrod. The rest of the film centers around Lily, Jarrod, and his family attempting to gain some sort of understanding of each other.

The strength of Eagle vs. Shark is its ability make a viewer laugh, cringe, and go “aww” all at the same time. There were several moments in the movie where I had to look around at other audience members to make sure it was okay to laugh. By the end of the film, I had fallen completely in love with Lilys’ character, who continues to pursue the love of her life despite his complete and utter idiocy. Also of note is the films’ kick-ass soundtrack, provided mostly by New Zealand band The Phoenix Foundation, with contributions by M. Ward and The Stone Roses. The all New Zealander cast, which includes about-to-be-famous Flight of the Conchords guy Jermaine Clement as Jarrod, manages to hit just the right mix of humor and awkwardness that this type of movie requires. Eagle vs. Shark comes highly recommended from me, which should be all the recommendation you need.
