With The Debut Of Their New Video, Against Me! Have Officially Transformed Into The Replacements

Friday, August 1st, 2008

We knew it was only a matter of time. We saw it coming from a mile away. AGAINST ME! just released their new video for “New Wave” and it takes more than a liberal amount of influence from THE REPLACEMENTS video for “Bastards Of Young”. A black and white single edit shot, no band, smoking, one camera angle, ending with destruction of said music.

We love the direction AM! has gone with this new album, loosening up the idea of what they consider punk and just writing good tunes. They’ve done a killer cover of “Bastards” in the past so it was only a matter of time they actually mimicked it’s video. With any luck they will turn a new generation of people onto the ‘Mats catalog.

In Brief…Thursday: Leeroy Jenkins, Rock The Library, Kung Fu, Soccer Balls, Future Of The Left, Yahoo!, Live Nation

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

- Leeroy Jenkins was a question on Jeopardy.

- Some people don’t know how to act in public. Others know, but just don’t seem to care…and then there is this woman.

- Kung Fu B-Movie + Gang of Thugs + Man with No Legs = The World’s Worst Fight Scene Ever OR the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen?

- Future Of The Left and Ted Leo will be opening for Against Me! this fall! Gotta get out and see FOTL and chant for some Mclusky songs to be played.

- When AC/DC wrote the song “Big Balls”, they might have had this in mind. Visionaries, those Young brothers.

- Yahoo! is offering compensation for those who bought their DRM-loaded tunes.

- Live Nation didn’t REALLY want artists to completely leave the majors after signing mega deals with major artists.

Warped Tour | Merriweather Post Pavillion Columbia, MD | 7.16.2008 | By Brian Graber

The summer institution that is Warped Tour rolled through the “DC Area” at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD on Wednesday. With no clouds, no humidity and a high of roughly 90, it seemed like a great day and it was for the most part.

HOWEVER, how can you have AGAINST ME! play at 11:45AM?!?! For realz? This year was quite possibly the earliest I ever arrived at a Warped Tour and due to the atrocious layout, it took nearly 30 minutes to walk from the entrance, down and around and across what felt like the Great Plains to get to the big board. (I believe it was Matt Caughthran from The Bronx who referred to it as “The Trail of Tears,” a common sentiment that many bands referenced during the day). Once down by the main stages we realized that AM! had already been playing for 20ish minutes. I then proceeded to run to the main stage and heard the end of “Sink, Florida, Sink,” “Don’t Lose Touch” and “Thrash Unreal.” You win some and lose some, but I didn’t want to lose that one. MFers… (more…)

Monday, April 28th, 2008

A few weeks ago AGAINST ME! announced they were going to have their song “Stop” used for an upcoming Rock The Vote promotional PSA. Then still shots appeared of the band performing with things burning in the background. Now it’s all come together and we got ourselves a PSA and people wanting us to vote.

The Body Of War Soundtrack Is Out Now

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Body Of WarWith the current state of national politics leaving a fog of tension so thick in the air that you could cut it with a chainsaw – a new documentary is making its way around the film fest circuit called Body Of War. Produced by Phil Donahue, it serves as a startling portrait of what’s happening to the brave men & women of the US Armed Forces – after they come home from our current conflict(s).

From the previews available online, it’s a truly touching story, revolving around Tomas Young, an Iraq War veteran, and his struggle to have something verging upon normalcy after returning home to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair. The film has also sparked an amazing two-disc soundtrack compilation cd, available today in stores – Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran.

This set was put together by Young himself, as a collection of songs which he says were – “tracks that inspired, motivated, and at times, literally saved me over the past few years.” All proceeds from sales will go to the non-profit organization IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War).

In September, Sire records donated $100,00 to the group in Young’s name, help support the fund’s message of giving a voice to past and current members of the armed forces who are against the war, but are under pressures to maintain silence about it. Shepard Fairey of OBEY fame donated the artwork for the album, and the discs feature a large number of fantastic bands, including Tom Waits, Neil Young, Eddie Vedder, Against Me!, Public Enemy, and more. Too Much Momentum…

The March issue of Alternative Press has AGAINST ME! on the cover. It’s pretty damn awesome to see them rock the cover of AP for the first time and watch (especially Tom with the “dude ’stache”) getting their smirk on. If that was not enough, there are two covers for the March issue and it’s kinda fitting that TEGAN AND SARA are the other cover. Could this be because of the duet, “Borne On The FM Waves Of The Heart” that AM! did with Tegan on New Wave?

Here’s the third “official” video for the next single of the latest AGAINST ME! album New Wave. Shot in black and white and a decidely simple treament that totally works for the band. The film was directed by Justin Staggs a Minneapolis-based filmmaker who’s credits include NOFX, Smoke Or Fire, Strike Anywhere, and Lagwagon. And thanks to Matt at latenightwallflower we now know that Paddy Costello of The Dillinger Four is the talk show host in the clip.

AGAINST ME! have another video. Rather than going the dump-some-wine-on-us-while-we’re-rocking route of their last video, this is a collection of live clips from them on the road. Since the band is always on tour it 1) makes sense for a live clip video and 2) really gives you no excuse for you to miss them live. 2007 has been a pretty amazing year for the band and 2008 is shaping up to be just as kickass.
