Watchmen Trailer Creates Skyrocketing Sales For Obscure Smashing Pumpkins Track

Online buzz remains high for the upcoming film adaptation of classic graphic novel Watchmen, though rumor has it the studio is concerned over its mainstream potential. Hollywood can now rest easier thanks to an unlikely indicator of the recently-released trailer’s success.
The trailer prominently (though without credit) features SMASHING PUMPKINS b-side “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning”, a cut from the 1997 Batman & Robin soundtrack (a rather unfortunate coincidence, if you ask us). Following the trailer’s July 18 release, the track took over the top spot as the Pumpkins’ all-time best selling song on iTunes - before the end of the weekend.
It took less than 3 days for the song to pass the all-time iTunes sales of hit singles like “1979″ and “Tonight, Tonight”. This statistic should put the song’s zero-to-sixty momentum into perspective: the week prior to the trailer’s release, it sold just 11 copies. The week following, it sold over ten thousand. That’s over a 94,000% increase. Yes, ninety-four thousand percent. For an 11 year-old song!
That has to be one of the all-time best sales spikes for a single after being featured on a movie soundtrack. Billy Corgan was not available at press time to comment on this story, or his eerie resemblance to Dr. Manhattan.
