The Friday List: Bands That Should Have A Biopic Made About Them
posted by Matt on June 6th, 2008 in Feature, Music, The Friday List
The much touted Ian Curtis/Joy Division biopic Control was released on DVD this week. The movie’s release got us thinking…What bands/artists would we like to see have their lives made into a Biopic movie? So that became the topic the Friday List.
Some Parameters: Documentarys do not count, most bands have a documentary made about them at some point. We’re talking a full-fledged Hollywood film with actors and directors (think Ray or The Rose). We also thought it would be interesting to suggest actors/actresses that should be cast. If we’re anything, it’s thorough.
- THE SMITHS / MORRISSEY
There’s nothing better than British drama.
CAST: Christian Bale would handle the role of the Moz.
- OZZY OSBOURNE
His story of years of drug abuse and ant snorting couldn’t be written by 20 fiction writers.
CAST: Is there any other option than Jack Black as the Ozz-man? It’s like trying to think of someone other than Patrick Stewart to play Professor X.
- PIXIES
Influence, fighting, breakups, reunions, legacy. It’s be a great ride even if Frank Black ends up a bit chunkier at the end.
CAST: Minnie Driver as Kim Deal and Bruce Willis as Frank Black.
- BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Think about it, kid from the streets of Jersey becomes one of the biggest rock legends of all time? Imagine the soundtrack?
CAST: Gerard Butler has the working class vibe and could pull off the classier moments of The Boss as well.
- RADIOHEAD
Any good biopic needs to have a horrible event happen to the main character as a child. For Radiohead it could be a terrible fishing accident that leaves little Thom Yorke with a lazy eye.
CAST: Paul Giammati as Thom Yorke and Aston Kutcher would play Johnny Greenwood.
- ARETHA FRANKLIN
There’s definitely an audience. Someone saw Dreamgirls.
CAST: Selecting Jennifer Hudson to play Aretha would pretty much guarantee her an Oscar for best Actress. Supporting roles are for suckers!
- THE CURE
Goth kids and college women looking for love everywhere would flock to theatres to see the story of Robert Smith and his rise to black-cloaked greatness.
CAST: Johnny Depp would make a good Fat Bob because we kinda get the vibe that he’s stood in front of a mirror and lip synched to a few Cure songs in his lifetime.
- THE RAMONES
If we’re not counting Rock N Roll High School as a biopic. We think the story about one of the greatest punk bands ever and their plunge into the NYC scene would be awesome.
CAST: Howard Stern would play Joey Ramone of course. They bear a striking resemblence to each other and Stern has proven he has acting chops when he’s into the subject matter.
- B-52’s
We’d love to see a movie about this group just to see who they’d cast in it.
CAST: Does Andy Dick seem too obvious a choice to play Fred Schneider?
- OTIS REDDING
A tragic ending to any story makes any movie great. Because of his life story, a biopic about Otis Redding would be a mega-success.
CAST: Denzel Washington as Otis. He has the acting muscle and would understand the gravity of the role.
- NICK DRAKE
This would be another movie that would have a tragic ending but with the demons Drake had in his life, it would definitely make for a great story.
CAST: Even though it couldn’t happen now, Heath Ledger seems almost too perfect for this role.
- HALL & OATS
The main turmoil of the entire movie could be should Hall shave or not shave the mustache.
CAST: Denis Leary as Hall and Mario Lopez as Oats.
- BOB SEGER
His music has been used in many other biopics, why not one about him and the trials and tribulations making sure rock n roll never forgetting.
CAST: Donal Logue definitely has the working class vibe that Seger would require.

This was pretty damn funny.
I think we’re most proud of Paul Giamatti as Thom Yorke
