The Teriyaki Boyz Zock On!!

I’m not quite sure how these guys have flown under my radar until now, given the line-up of producers on their 2006 album – Beef or Chicken?

The album features a different producer on almost every track, including (but not limited to) Dj Shadow, Mark Ronson, Adrock, Cut Chemist, Dan The Automator, The Neptunes, and Just Blaze. That listing alone gets my mind racing.

Add on the fact that the group’s full time DJ is Nigo – the head of A Bathing Ape (BAPE) clothing, one of the most infamous of streetware brands, and the room starts to spin.

Then today, I see this, the video for the group’s newest single, “Zock On!!” Featuring Pharrell (of N*E*R*D / The Neptures) and Busta Rhymes. The video is slick, and does one helluva job showcasing the group…And it’s…it’s really good. Pharrell spits in nihongo (Japanese), while a good portion of the rest of the song splits time between Japanese and English. Throw in the fact that the song has a tricked out Neptunes beat behind it, and Busta’s badass rhyme, and you’ve got all the makings of one killer song.

Also of note (as the band is so heavily endorsed by BAPE) Bape is also tied directly to the Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream – Pharrell’s personal streetware brand.

The albums drops this week, but it looks like a Japan-only release through (B)APE Sounds, the BAPE record label, also started by Nigo.

Now if only I could find more info in English on the band, and where the heck I can get a copy of that single, I’d be set!!
