Leica M8: Made For A Lifetime In The Digital Era

posted by Gray on February 26th, 2008 in Technology

LeicaLeica has been world-renowned for decades as makers of some of the finest lenses and compact cameras around - quite literally the stuff of legends. As an Icon in the world of photography, the name alone lends itself to black and white fantasies of parissian cafes and roman holidays; from a photographer’s standpoint, the name beckons thoughts of superb quality, ease of use, and unparalledled performance in 35 mm formats.

In the age of digital cameras, Leica still remains a legend, though more for selling lenses to other camera companies, or as a thowback for those who like to keep it analog, Leica (as well as others, such as the infamous Holga) “keep it real”. 35 mm film, much like vinyl, being the last bastian of those who prefer a classic outlook on the world, with film and vinyl being preferred to the digital counterparts of jpegs and mp3s.

But Leica has chosen to keep moving forward, bringing their photographic quality into the digital age, but with a twist. Their digital model, the M8, will last for a lifetime just as their classic 35 mm cameras (the M7 and MP) always have, through a new upgrade progam. As digital cameras and optics progress, just as with any electronics these days, within six months of making a purchase, you find yourself already behind the 8-ball in terms of tech. There’s always a new model out (or just around the corner) with more memory, faster action, and higher ratings, wether it’s a laptop or a digital camera.

Not only is the digital M8 compatible with M-series lenses, There will also be a constant upgrade program in place. As Leica deems it viable, your digital camera will be able to receive hardware updates to improve things such as the ccd, mmegapixel ratings, shutter mechanics, keep you on the edge in terms of tech, while keeping you from having to buy a new camera every year. Currently the M8 boasts a fantastic 10.3 megapixel rating, ultra-smooth shutter, and viewfinder pane made from scratch-resistant sapphire glass (the only camera on the market to use it).

In a world of throw-away electronics and ultra-sleek design, Leica mantains an impeccable feel, a lifetime of quality, and truly forward-thinking design.
