Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die Tour | Radio City Music Hall, NYC | 2.24.2008

Will Ferrell took the stage Sunday night to the overwhelming sound of people “booing” as he came out sporting a New England Patriots sweatshirt, which he immediately tore off to reveal the red and blue of the Giants. Ferrell’s tour promoting both his website funnyordie.com and his new film Semi-Pro featured skits from Ferrell along with stand up from Demetri Martin, Nick Swardson and Zach Galifianakis. The show started with Ferrell pitching his new self help program “Will Power” which included 2 books and 900 tapes, most of which were empty. Will was then informed that this was the comedy show and he was in fact being indicted for his self help pyramid scheme after the show.
Among Ferrell’s other skits included him being painted entirely in silver doing an impression of the “robot guy” who you may find in a tourist trap like Times Square. Anchorman director Adam McKay who served as the host for the night, told Ferrell to drop the robot and take questions from the fans. This resulted in some of the most awkward moments of the night as people asked some bizarre questions such as “Will, I love seeing you naked, how did you get that scar on your stomach?”
The obvious highlight of the night was when Ferrell came out in character as Ron Burgundy to do an interview. Burgundy then introduced his interview subject, legendary newscaster Tom Browkaw. Browkaw played along with Ferrell nicely as they recalled a newscasters convention that ended up with Diane Sawyer topless on a snowmobile. While Browkaw was able to deal with Ferrell’s absurd questions, he also seemed to be questioning why the hell he was there.
While Ferrell was entertaining the true highlight of the night came from the stand-ups as they were the most consistently funny. Demetri Martin was spot on as he went through various drawings on his notepad and performed his last segment of jokes playing the electric guitar, which he claimed was “tuned enough for comedy.” The bulk of Swardson’s material was from his latest release Party, focusing mostly on beer, pot and fart jokes which was overly appropriate for the large segment of frat guys in attendance. Galifianakis told a great selection of jokes and even did some impressions like “Vegan Guy who accidentally ate meat.” To end his set Zach did a presentation on “Hope” which found him stripping down to a “Annie-style” dress and singing “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” while tearing through pages of a large note-pad with various jokes on them. One can only assume that video of this will surface soon.
