Slightly Stoopid

Southern California’s SLIGHTLY STOOPID put on a smokin’ performance last night as part of the Summer Haze tour with co-headliner G. Love and Special Sauce. The band blazed through a set that was a nice mix of songs off their recently released Chronchitis and a mix of fan favorites. Fortunately a high percentage of the audience had lighters which lit up the night sky at Central Park during the slow jams.

Could We See New iPods Just In Time For The New School Year?

September 5, the day of wreakoning

We’re only posting this because Graham here in our office has been on the desire buy for a new iPod for a few months now. He’s been hesitant to pick the sucker up for he’s wanted to wait for the next generation of iPod. Now’s his chance!

Who knows how they can top themselves this time around. Maybe 100+gb storage? Maybe a complete touch screen like the iPhone? Maybe it will make us a sandwich and tuck us into bed at night? Who knows?! All we know is that this is a picture of the invite to the next Apple event and that it appears all will be revealed to us on September 5th, just in time for us to whine about the high price tag and beg someone to buy it for us as a Christmas present.

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Hilly KristalHILLY KRISTAL, the founder of the legendary NYC punk rock club, CBGBs has passed away, he was 75 years old.

Kristal died from complications stemming from Lung Cancer. He founded CBGBs in 1973 and ran the club for the next 33 years untill it’s much publicized and debated closing in 2006.

The official statement from Kristal’s family.

It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007, from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase “Country Bluegrass and Blues”; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations.

Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club.

A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly’s honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003).

Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, Kevin Devine Do Impromptu Weezer Cover

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

While overseas for the Leed’s festival, members of MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA, KEVIN DEVINE, and BRAND NEW all thought it would be a fun idea to get on an “open mic” side-stage and perform a cover song. That song was “My Name Is Jonas” by Weezer.

A posting on punktastic.com by Paul Savage tells the story.

The strangest thing happened Saturday at Leeds Festival. I was walking to get some chips and went past a tent that Nokia had, where anyone could sign up to play a song. Mostly shit bands doing shit covers. I heard “My Name Is Jonas” playing so i couldn’t help to poke my head in and my jaw almost hit the ground. It was Jesse & Vin & Brian from Brand New, with a few of the Manchester Orchestra guys and Kevin Devine. They must have just signed up like everyone and played as a surprise. There were only about 30 people in the tent and nobody seemed to know who they even were. They were playing like it was on the main stage and really going for it. It was sloppy but incredible.. Afterwards the announcer said that their name was Dark Horse or something. I snapped this pic. Someone seemed to be filming video…I am hoping it will turn up somewhere.
