Ra Ra Riot

RA RA RIOT performed their first show since the untimely death of drummer John Pike last night at South Street Seaport. The band performed a new track dedicated to Pike, which can be found in acoustic form on their MySpace page.

The sound guy mixed the music poorly, but Ra Ra Riot still put on a fun show.  The band dance-rocked the crowd’s faces off with their high-hat heavy beats and wonderfully executed string section.  The buzz they have been receiving lately is definitely justified. Expect big things from this band with their next release.

Thursday Team Up With Victory Records (Again) To Release DVD/CD

Friday, June 29th, 2007

ThursdayAfter parting ways with Island Records earlier this year, THURSDAY have announced that they will be teaming up with with indie label Victory Records to put out a DVD/CD retrospective. Victory was the home to the band and released their album Full Collapse, a groundbreaking album in both style and substance that made many youth of the time pick up a guitar and start their own band.

The DVD/CD will be a retrospective of the band’s career, spanning the last 9 years of their career with a bunch of live footage. The cd portion of the album will have some new tracks as well as re-workings of popular songs. Think of it as a B-Sides type album.

It’s common knowledge that the band’s inital departure from the label was rocky but the band is using this as a chance to settle some long-running problems between them as a band and the label.

The official statement from the band and label can be read after the jump. (more…)

MOVIE REVIEW: Eagle Vs. Shark | By Leah Pavlick

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Eagle vs. SharkMost of my life philosophy is based around my deeply held belief that true love exists, and everyone can find it if they look hard enough. I’m not talking about some kind of fairytale bullshit where some dude rescues some chick from a dragon or whatnot, but the kind of love that makes you realize you have found your reflection in another person. The movie Eagle vs. Shark confirms this notion for me. That’s not to say that this movie is a Notebook-style love story; I say this simply because if the two main characters found each other, anybody should be able to do the same.

Quirky is a word there just begins to describe the mood of Eagle vs. Shark. Many people had described it to me as a “New Zealand Napoleon Dynamite“, and I can see where they draw the resemblance. I tend to like Eagle vs. Shark much better for two reasons: there is A, a plot, and B, character development. It follows the developing relationship of Lily and Jarrod, the male and female winners for the Most Awkward Person contest. Lily is a painfully shy Meaty Boy checkout girl who develops a raging crush on one of her regular customers. The Meaty Boy loving Jarrod is a space cadet in the highest sense of the term, so wrapped up in the fantasy world he has created for himself that he would fail to recognize his face in the mirror, let alone another person’s undying love for him.
